Women s Rights Of Women - 1159 Words

Women’s Rights is an extremely ethical topic that is surrounded by ethical theories and has a lot of history. While some of the theoretical systems in ethics have helped to gain women their rights, others have assisted in preventing women rights. Women in America have seen much improvement in our modern day society regarding Women’s Rights, but what about the women in less economically stable countries? Women continue to fight against abuse, hatred, and discrimination worldwide. I will be discussing not only Women’s Rights history, but also several theoretical systems and how they have impacted Women’s Rights in America and other countries. Women have fought for equal rights for many centuries. Prior to the twentieth century women in America often stayed home to cook, clean and take care of the children. Women were not given an opinion on the household, they simply did what they were told to do. Women typically did not work or go to school, and were often viewed as domestic beings while men were the head of the house hold. It was not until the late 1800’s, some women were able to volunteer as nurses or housekeepers to help during the Civil War (Sivulka). Women assisted in caring for the injured, as well as cooking meals for the soldiers and doing laundry. Even though the tasks were similar, just feeling needed in another environment other than home was probably fulfilment in itself. After the Civil War, the progress seemed to stall. Ethics for Counselling Samples for Students †MyAssignmenthelp.com

Question: Discuss about the Counselling. Answer: While counselling is a loosely used term, it is usually used in a professional context. Counselling usually refers to the act of giving advices to an individual, who is finding himself in a troublesome situation, and is seeking serious advice for the same. However, in the professional and narrower context, the term counselling is used to denote an activity where a client finding himself being beset with personal problems, contacts a professional counsellor, to provide him comprehensive solutions to a problem (Alpturer, 2016). It should be remembered here, that a counsellor is not responsible for solving the problem of an individual, and he is expected only to provide advices to the client on what steps can mitigate and prevent his problems. For example, an individual may contact a counsellor because he is suffering from Depression, after being diagnosed with Cancer. Now, the counsellor will not be able to cure him of Cancer or Depression, or any other ailment, but can offer him moral support, change his way of thinking and seeking things, and lift up his spirits. Besides, the counsellor can also prescribe him some Yoga classes that can help him gain back peace of mind (Brown, 2013). The counsellor is responsible for restoring mental health and well-being of the clients, and will help them stay at peace with themselves. A client can also motivate the client, and teach him how to battle with the hard situations of life, but is not expected to solve the problems. For example, in the above counselling session, it is being observed that the client, Valerie is not able to muster the courage to communicate before a larger audience, so the counsellor rightly inspired her by drawing examples of eminent personalities who had similar problems in the past. This gave her the confidence to believe that her problem does have proper solutions, ad she returned with greater motivation. This is what a counsellor does he identifies and evaluates a problem, offers effective solutions, and inspire an individual win over difficult situations by overcoming inner dilemmas. A counsellor is usually expected to hold a masters or even a doctoral degree in Psychology, and he offers counselli ng service in a variety of areas- such as relationship, marriage, education, career advancement and others (Bond, 2015). It is needless to state that a counsellor plays a highly important role in the life of a client, as a client approaches professional help only when he finds it extremely difficult to cope up with the problems of his life. Hence, a successful counsellor has many roles to play- he plays the role of an active listener, a persuader, a confidant, a friend and a guide. This is the reason why a counsellor should not only possess the relevant degree, but should necessarily possess the required skills, that can help him serve the clients in a better way. First of all, the counsellor should have a friendly approach towards the client, and should try t help out the client in the best possible way (McMohan, 2016). He must know how to help the client and helping does not constitute offering concrete solutions to the problems, but should also involve offering moral support and emotional backing to the client. He should not only get his problem solved, but he should also believe that he is not alon e in this world. Next, it the persuasive skills of a counsellor are as important as his listening skills. It should be noted that a client will not visit a counsellor simply because he wants to hear lectures about what should have been done by him, but he will also wish to be understood in the first place. In case the counsellor is trying to simplify his task, by stating facts to the client, the client may feel all the more depressed and helpless (McLeod, 2015). It is highly important that the counsellor attends to the problems of the client, both physically and psychologically, so that the client understands that the counsellor is open for any form of assistance (Dryden Mytton, 2016). This is the reason why counsellors are required to maintain a relaxed body position, so that the client can be comfortable in explaining his problems to him. Thirdly, active engagement in the problem of the client or effective empathy is an important skill that should be present in the counsellor. In case of over-professional counsellors, the clients fail to open up about their problems, and benefit too little from the counselling sessions (Deurzen Adams, 2016). Although the problem of the client is apparently not the problem besetting the counsellor, he should actively engage himself in the problem of the client, use a compassionate tone and endearing words, such as I am sorry dear, so that he can first take his client in confidence. Unless the client has confidence in the counsellor, no amount of good advice can guide him to act in the right way, and hence to persuade the client, a counsellor must learn to look beyond his point of view and try to understand the clients problem. The fourth important skill to be possessed by a counsellor is his questioning and summarising skills (Hough, 2014). A client often takes too much time to open up about his problem, and thus the counsellor with his effective communication skills, must keep on insisting the client to open up about what is bothering him. The client may choose to keep numb about his personal problems before a stranger and may withhold crucial facts, but it is the duty of a counsellor to keep on making inquiries unless everything about the life of the client is clear to him. The last yet not the least important skill is the challenging skill of self-disclosure. Self-disclosure refers to the act of disclosing personal information of the counsellor for creating rapport and facilitating the process of self-disclosure of the client (Coelho et al. 2016). In other words, it may happen that a shy, introvert client comes up for counselling who hesitates to reveal each single detail of his personal life, and prefers to keep numb (Tolan Cameron, 2016). In such a situation, the self-disclosure strategy is being chosen by the counsellor shares stories or incidents of his personal life to help the client feel at ease about the persistent problems of his life. However, it is important to consider the extent to which the aforementioned skills of counselling were being followed by me in my counselling session with Valerie. I would like to state here that I have explored my basic and crucial counselling sessions. First of all, possessing effective communication skills has proved to be advantageous for me. I observed that initially Valerie was upset, and yet awkward to open up before me about her inabilities and poor communication skills. Hence, I chose to greet her, and inform her that I am always there to listen to and solve her problems carefully. This gave her slight courage to open up before me, about how uncomfortable she is in delivering public speech. As I observed that he is being pessimistic about his future career, I told her how it was okay to have slight issues that can be resolved easily. This helped me create a client-counsellor relation that was evident as Valerie more actively got involved with me in the discussion of the prob lem (Nelson Jones, 2015). Next, I also have played the role of an active listener, and listened to each of Valeries problems with much attention and this helped Valerie as she realized that her troubles were not being unheard of. I noticed that the pitch of her voice was quite low and depressed, while her facial expression was pale, and her non-verbal cues such as agitated behaviour, and restlessness were being taken note of. I understood that the problem of Valerie, just like any other client, does not exist in her lack of communication skills but in her misconception that her inability to surmount this problem would lead to failures in her professional life. Hence, I chose to listen to her empathetically, and occasionally offer support exclaiming: That indeed is a serious problem. This helped me form a rapport with Valerie who gradually opened up to me about her past experiences with a greater ease (Joyce Sills, 2014). Meanwhile, I have also explored my questioning skills, as I investigated the matter, asking her since when she had been facing these speech troubles, and collected valuable information about her traumatic childhood days when she was being laughed at for speaking inaccurate English. Asking her questions helped me explore her past incidents that had shaped how she thinks today, and that accounts for her low self-esteem. The self-disclosure strategy was not being directly chosen by me, as I did not refer to any incident of my past life, I observed that Valerie is a girl suffering from low confidence, and hence her confidence could best be boosted by telling her inspirational tales of eminent celebrities, like Nicole Kidman, and hence I chose to motivate her by telling their stories. This did give her a lot of confidence, changing her unrealistic thinking that poor communication skills can impede the professional success of any individual. I purposively chose to omit the last skill in my counselling session, because I understood that it would no t be apt to serve the current situation. Since the girl was required to feel motivated, it was important to refer to people who would inspire her in an effective way. I would like to mention here that through the counselling session I had tried to help out Valerie in the best possible way. I motivated her, inspired her to believe in herself and instilled a strong sense of confidene in her. From being a girl speaking in a slow despondent voice, Valerie changed within the session to be a girl with better understanding of her goals. I not only helped her feel motivated, but also offered her real solutions to her problems. For example, I recommended her to enhance her communication and soft skills by enrolling herself in a training session, and also advised her to practice before mirror or her close relatives, and develop the habit of speaking without any problem. Further, I boosted her confidence by generalizing her issue, and this did help in changing her perspective about the problem. While she considered this issue to be an insurmountable problem that would lead her to failure, I helped her understand that this was only a trivial challenge that sh e needed to overcome. I was able to persuade her about my perspective and her self-esteem did improve after the session got over. However, while counselling Valerie I encountered a few limitations that hindered and challenged my ability to explore my existent counselling skills to its fullest. First of all, I got merely 15 minutes for completing the session, out of which around 5 minutes were gone in helping Valerie speak up about my problem. It was difficult to assess her problem, convince her and change her perception within a short frame of time (Hough, 2014). Time constraint was an important limitation. Besides, Valerie took a little time in opening up about her whole problem to me, and thus I had to make much effort to feel comfortable to open up before me. Besides, the third limitation is that Valerie was a little shy and introvert, and thus it was difficult for me to understand if she was agreeing with my perspective, or merely nodding her head to please me. Again, Valerie was a little depressed when she came for the session to me, and thus she appeared to be a little unapproachable and unconvinced initi ally. This made the job of reading her mind, complexities of her problems, and persuading her a little difficult for me. However, I would like to conclude here that this counselling session has helped me to figure out the important skills I possess as a counsellor. Besides, it has helped me to mould my existent knowledge to serve my client for serving my client better. For example, I chose not to apply the self-disclosure strategy for Valerie, and decided to refer to eminent personalities whose stories might interest her more. Thus, this counselling session with Valerie had helped me tow work more independently. Although a series of key limitations were being encountered in the process, that did discourage me for a few moments, ultimately I utilized my counselling skills to overcome the same. It had been an enlightening experience to help a girl open out about her problem, share her childhood experiences and motivate her that would hopefully help her to stay motivated in future. For many reasons such as: they were both surprise attacks, In pearl harbor the first wave of fighter planes attacked, on September 11th a group of terrorist intentionally crashed into the world trade center causing destruction and ciaos. Another situation why these two are similar is the involvement into war such as these tragic events, World War Two and the war against terrorism. These two events took place on american soil thus causing the nation to unite. Although many were killed this nation will always unite in time of need. The American peop le will prevail as it has before and will continue in the future. The tragic events of pearl harbor in December 7,1941 and September 11, 2001 are so much alike and so very much different. The United States entered a war when Japan attacked the United States. When the terrorist attacked the U.S. we declared war against terrorism. The Terrorist attacked us in 2001 causing 6,300 civilians casualties; When Japan attacked us in 1941 2,400 people died. The difference beingpearl harbor was a military base and the actions on September 11th was more targeted to the worlds economy and the United States safety. I learned by writing this paper that history tends to repeat itself. We as American people have to know to stand united and to be strong for each other, so this beautiful country can prosper. This country will not fall in the hands of an opposing oppressor. We have freedom because many different races of American solders fought in past battles and wars to keep those freedoms alive. If we don’t keep this country from getting stripped of it’s freedom the entire United States population will possibly be next. Who knows what lies ahead all people need to realize that we need not to resolve this in acts of war but be civil and resolve it on pen and paper. The strongest words that any one can say is â€Å"where do I sign† these words can resolve issues. I learned to use the power of education to work around war but not to build instruments of war. To keep peace and plan ahead because if you don’t you’ll be unprepared and not able to handle the situation that arise. Bibliography:

4 Ways to Impress Any Hiring Manager

4 Ways to Impress Any Hiring Manager No matter how great your resume, how extensive your skills, how thorough your qualifications, if you don’t have that â€Å"know it when you see it† something special, you may not be able to convince the hiring manager that you’re the one. Here are four traits you can work on showcasing in the interview process that just might get you the job.Practice your playground 101Scheduled for a lunch or coffee interview, rather than an appointment in the office? The hiring manager might be trying to suss out how well you play with others. Can you make small talk? Can you put people, including and especially yourself, at ease? Are you pleasant and personable? You may not realize how important people skills are, even for jobs that don’t require a lot of client or customer interface. Remember, your coworkers have to interact with you every day. Show them they won’t regret taking you on board! Politeness and self-awareness will go a long way here.Don’t be shyDon’t overdo it and come across as an overzealous lunatic, but do try and let your enthusiasm shine through. Love this kind of work? Have tons of passion? Be yourself and show how hungry you are to succeed. You might just have the kind of spark your hiring manager is searching for.Do diligenceThink of the interview as your first assignment and do your homework. Learn everything you can about the company and the team you’d be working on, and go in with a few intelligent, insightful questions. This will be a great way to â€Å"show, not tell† the truth of that â€Å"hard worker† line in your cover letter. Also have a story or two on hand about times when you went above and beyond- just to sink the point.Be niceWe’re back on the playground again. Try and show your interviewer you’d be the kind of colleague they’d want to go to happy hour with to cheers over a big win. Be solicitous and easygoing. If the team likes you, that will go a long way in decision making. The bottom line is: be yourself, but go the extra mile to make sure your best self is shining through in interview situations, even when you’re nervous and concentrating on selling your skills. It can make all the difference.

History of the Death Penalty

History of the Death Penalty Free Online Research Papers The death penalty has been debated since the beginning of civilization. The death penalty was first developed by the Greeks for major punishment. The first method that they used was stoning however, today it is mostly done by a lethal injection or hanging. Today a total of 94 countries and territories use the death penalty for any kind of crime, including the United States. In the other 57 countries in the world, the death penalty no longer exists. There are currently thirty-four out of fifty states to still have the death penalty. Should the death penalty be allowed, or should it be abolished? There are plenty of reasons that one would consider the death penalty. The person that committed the crime deserves to be punished. If the person that committed the crime killed people than he should have to die for that crime. There is an ancient saying that states â€Å"An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth†-Hammurabi, 1792. This means that you if do something to harm another person, that same thing will be done to you. If we fallowed this rule today the person that committed a crime would get the death penalty. There are several events in our society that would qualify for the death penalty. The rule is basically if you kill a lot of people you will receive the death penalty. When somebody is sentenced to life in prison, rather than the death penalty, they have to be paid for to keep them alive. We have to pay that money from our taxes to keep a criminal alive. If he is going to spend that long in prison, he might as well be dead. Also, the victim’s famil y deserves revenge from a man that killed one of their family members. If someone is only in prison for a short amount of time, but committed a serious crime, he could get out and cause even more trouble. This person should be gotten rid of right away by the death penalty. There are also several reasons that the death penalty should be abolished. If a prisoner is given twenty years and changes while he’s in there, he deserves to be free. Everybody deserves a second chance. A good example of this is Michael Vick. He was sentenced to a couple of years in jail for dog fighting. After he does his time the NFL says he won’t be able to play any more. If he does his time and has good behavior, he should be able to play again. What if a prison is tried and proven guilty and sentenced to the death penalty, but later is proven innocent. What should happen then? There was a story where a man was sentenced to life in prison, but later after twenty years it turned out that he didn’t commit the crime. What should this man get for having to spend twenty years in jail. It is reasons like these that we should not have the death penalty. If a person is sentenced to many years in prison, he can get out and have good behavior, and go on to live a normal life. Should people who have mental retardation be given the death penalty? There was an incident in 1989 where a man was sentenced to the death penalty. The lawyer had not realized that he had not told the judge that the man was mentally retarded. The jury said that they would have never proven him guilty if they knew that he was mentally retarded. It is reasons like this that the death penalty should be abolished. Should the death penalty be allowed, or should it be abolished? I believe that the death penalty should be allowed. If you get into enough trouble to go to prison for life, you should have to die for committing the crime. We also have to pay for prisoners to stay in jail. They could also get out early and cause more harm than what they did before. An example of this is Saddam Hussein; if he was not hanged right away he would go out and cause even more trouble. The death penalty should be allowed to any country that wishes to do it. American economy Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

American economy - Essay Example The Constitution gave the country a framework to fall back on.Yet there were a lot more that needed to be plugged in.A judicial system did not exist and laws could not be framed.During 1789 to 1797,the Congress fleshed out the constitution, giving it the much-needed legal, bureaucratic, and military machThe conflict between the federalists and anti-federalists went from bad to worse and finally in 1800,the anti-federalists had their representative in the post of president – Thomas Jefferson.Washington had tried to lead the nation to greatness with the federal government.Jefferson intended to rescue the same nation from policies that had endangered its experiment in popular self-governance and had undermined the constitutional and social groundwork of a sound republican regime, from leaders whose commitment to democracy itself had seemed uncertain. The Jeffersonian democracy laid out political goals for the United States and reigned over American politics for two decades, 1800 â₠¬â€œ 1820s. Thomas Jefferson’s objectives for the country focused on the West. The spotlight was on the Yeoman farmers, who were the epitome of republican virtue and independence as compared to financiers and industrialists who were the pits of corruption. Soon after, in the years that followed, several anti-federalists were seen to join the Jeffersonian camp as well. The freedom of speech and freedom of the press were pedestalized and the anti-federalists believed that this was the only way in which to ensure that the government would not turn against its people. Violation of the rights of individuals and states were a serious offence and the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions of 1789, that were secretly written by Jefferson and Madison publicized these principles. Despite this, this presidency witnessed an

N&S Finance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

N&S Finance - Essay Example Quick ratio Quick ratio, just as current ratio, is a measure of the company’s liquidity level, only that Quick ratio excludes inventory. This ratio is significantly below the current ratio, which could be an indication that the company is maintaining a high level of inventory. In case the company’s inventory is not easily convertible into liquid cash, then its financial position is at crossroads because it may experience difficulties paying its short-term creditors. The management should also consider whether the company is experiencing sales difficulties because that could be the reason why its inventory level is quite high. If this is the case, strategies should be crafted to increase conversion of inventory into cash so the liquidity could get better. Nonetheless, the positive increase from 0.83 to 0.95 is remarkable and if this trend continues, the company will not have liquidity problems. Accounts receivable turnover This ratio also shows the company’s liqui dity level. It is a strong indicator of how the management has efficiently employed the accounts receivable. A ratio of 6.63 in 2009 is remarkably big, meaning that collection of accounts receivable and extension of credit to customers was operated efficiently. Alternatively, this may indicate that the company operated, chiefly, on cash basis. The drastic fall of the ratio in 2010 could send alarm signals to the management that something is wrong especially if this sale is not as a result of a shift from cash sales to credit sales. For instance, this could imply that the debtors are servicing their dues very slowly or even defaulting. Average Collection period Average collection period reflects the period that it takes for the company to receive its accounts receivables. The 53.03 days for 2009 is an ideal period because the company will be assured of conversion of its receivables into cash in less time and use the money to pay its bills. However, 214.38 days for 2010 is very high, and this means that the company may be headed for liquidity problems as a result of customers delaying or defaulting on their dues. This, in turn, will cause cash shortage and hence the company may not be able to meet its administrative and operating expenses. The management should revise its debt collection policies to avoid experiencing liquidity problems. Inventory turnover The inventory turnover for 2009 is 6.5 times, but this reduced to 3.96 times in 2010. This implies that the company’s sales have started moving slowly, which is discouraging because this will most likely affect the profits directly. This, however, could be a sign that the company is increasing its inventory. Decline in inventory turnover will result to cash shortage and hence this trend should be averted. Total asset turnover Total asset turnover indicates how the management has invested the assets to generate revenue. The higher the ratio the better because it shows that the assets are applied more eff iciently. Reduction of this ratio from 0.93 in 2009 to 0.71 in 2010 is a cause for alarm because it indicates that the company’s assets are used less effectively, to generating income. The management should seek ways of boosting sales to ensure this ratio is restored to an optimum level. Debt to total assets Debt to total assets shows the company’s financial leverage, by revealing the proportion of the total assets that are funded by debt. In 2009, 47.14% of the assets were financed by creditors

Asset Management at Wolseley Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Asset Management at Wolseley - Essay Example This is in a bid to expand its market and increase its profits in the highly competitive market. However, it is evident that the investment rates have been fluctuating according to the risk factors identified by the company’s experts. Some of the risk that determines whether Wolseley will invest or not include economic factors, new business models, margin pressures, liquidity and funding from financial institutions and other critical risk factors (Hastings 87). In cases where the company recognizes that the investment does not generate the expected profit margins, it considers disposition. One of the recent cases involved the company’s consideration of disposing of its French arm, after the realization that the European markets had become unbearably difficult. Reports indicated that an analysis of the situation revealed that Wolseley would either close down the arm or limit the investment towards it. Other situations include the Danish market, compelling the company to consider disposition. The team of experts assigned the role of strategizing on investment and disposition has done a remarkable task in management (67). This is the reason why the company is a leader among its competitors. As highlighted in the table above, Wolseley had placed increased importance on the importance of goodwill as one of its intangible assets. However, with time, the company has expanded its view of intangible assets to include trade means, customer relationships, and brand. The company has made remarkable efforts of upholding its integrity in a bid to protect its reputation, which has proved to be a significant asset. Wolseley now plans to invest in the other highlighted intangible assets in the future.  Ã‚

The Effectiveness Of Hand Washing Nursing Essay

The Effectiveness Of Hand Washing Nursing Essay This essay attempts to investigate whether hand washing is an effective technique in the prevention of the spread of infection. I will do this by analyzing the existing evidence in relation to the hierarchy of evidence. I will then use the Critical Skills Appraisal Programme (CASP) (2006) to discuss three studies, while looking at the related literature. Finally in the conclusion I will discuss how the evidence I have analyzed will affect my future practice. According to the centers of disease control (2002) hand washing is the simplest most effective measure for preventing the spread of bacteria, pathogens and viruses. Hamer (1999) reports evidence based practice aims to aid professionals in effective decision making to reduce ineffective, inappropriate possible hazardous practices. The strength of the hierarchy of evidence is that it acknowledges the valid contribution of evidence generated by a range of different types of research. However, hierarchies only provide a guide to the strength of the available evidence and other issues such as the quality of research also have an important influence (Evans, 2003). Cool et al 1992 suggest that the highest form of evidence available should be combined with the highest recommendation range as this suggests superior validity, applying these forms of evidence to practice should be considered. The Nursing and Midwifery Council (2008) guide lines would support this idea that the use of evidence-based practice is appropriate and necessary within the clinical setting. According to Duffy (2008) reflection is a development process, which should benefit the heal th care professional and their practice as a result. The Gibbs (1988) reflection model will be used throughout this essay to help reflect on the chosen aspect of nursing. Gibbs model of reflection (1988) begins by giving a description of the event. While on placement I was caring for an elderly man. In a three hour period this patient had four episodes of a sudden need to have his bowels opened. Each time the stool appeared to be loose. After the third episode I told my mentor who told me to talk a sample the next time he had his bowels opened. We also made other members of the team aware of this. Following these episodes the patient began to vomit frequently. My mentor along with the senior nurse decided that the patient should be place in a side room to prevent the spread of a possible infection the patient may have. Once the patient had been transferred to his room all staff were to wear aprons and gloves when in the room and to wash their hands when leaving the room. My mentor explained to me that these steps were taken to prevent the spread of infection. I have decided to look at the evidence that suggests that hand hygiene helps to prevent the s pread of infection as from talking to other members of staff they knew they should wash their hands for infection control reasons but knew little more. The CASP (2006) tool will be used to appraise the chosen research. Search engines such as Internurse, Journal of advance nursing and Cochrane Collaboration were used. Three main bodies of research will be focused on throughout this essay. Ejemot RI et al (2009) carried out a systematic review to evaluate the effects of interventions to promote hand washing on diarrhea episodes in children and adults. Two authors independently assessed trial eligibility and risk of bias. In order for evidence based medicine to be practiced clinical expertise and clinical evidence from systematic reviews need to be combined (Sackett et al, 1997). Incidence rate ratios (IRR) were pooled using the generic inverse variance method and random-effects model with 95% confidence intervals (CI). This systematic review was carried out in 2009 with 14 Randomized Controlled Trials (RCT) meeting the inclusion criteria. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are perceived as the gold-standard evaluation method for evidence based medicine and the rest to be a lower level evidence (Fielding et al, 2008). The evidence within this journal is considered to have a high impact factor. The impact factor of a journal reflects the frequency with which the journal s articles are cited in the scientific literature (Saha et al, 2003). The impact factor is used to determine the quality of a piece of evidence (Garfield, 2005). Eight trials were institution-based in high-income countries (7711 participants), five were community-based in low or middle-income countries (8055 participants), and one was in a high-risk group (people with acquired immune deficiency syndrome), these sample sizes are adequate, however the trials were carried out in various countries such as China, Australia, Europe, and North America where resources and materials for hand washing are relatively available and accessible with the exception of China. This may hinder the results. Results showed a 39% reduction in diarrhoea episodes in children in institutions in high-income countries and a 32% reduction in episodes in children living in communities in low- or middle-income countries. The author acknowledges the need for longer follow up periods. Randle et al (2010) performed an observational study which measured healthcare workers (HCWs), patients and visitors hand hygiene compliance over a 24Â  hour period. The study took place in two hospital wards in 2010. This study monitored a total of 823 hand hygiene opportunities. 659 (80%) of these participants were HCWs, 75 (9%) for patients and 89 (11%) for visitors. Of the 659 hand hygiene opportunities available to HCWs, compliance by doctors was 47%, nurses 75%, ancillary nurses and other staff 59%, and allied health professionals 78%. For HCWs, compliance did not vary between the two wards but did by shift with compliance being lower in the morning shift. The author has recognized variables that may have affected the results such as profession, ward type, time of day, type of opportunity and patient or visitors. The author also sates the likelihood of HCWs being directly observed was very high. Such a bias might distort compliance percentages. The fact the study took place in one hospital may limit the findings as the specific infrastructure and organisation of work may influence behaviour. Direct observation is the gold standard to monitor compliance to optimal hand hygiene practice and we conducted observations using a previously validated hand hygiene observation tool. There are many advantages and disadvantages to using the direct observational technique. Evaluation brief (2008) state some of the disadvantages may be, observer bias, people usually perform better when they know they are being observed, although indirect observation may decrease this problem, Can be expensive and time-consuming compared to other data collection methods and does not increase your understanding of why people behave as they do. Advantages to the observational technique have been identified by DeWALT and DeWALT (2002) allows you to directly see what people do rather than relying on what people say they did which does not rely on peoples willingness or ability to provide i nformation. Burnett et al (2008) conducted a quantitative study which aimed to study exploring perceptions of nurses and patients towards patient hand hygiene and addressing current practice in relation to patients who were unable to independently perform their own hand hygiene. From the results of this study it is clears that patient hand hygiene is an important factor in controlling and preventing HCAI, but patients still remain unable to carry out this task independently as they are not given the opportunity to do so. Opportunities for hand decontamination were identified. The results showed, 57% opportunities before meal times, 21% opportunities following use of the commode at the bedside, 2% opportunities after using the urinal, 5% opportunities after visiting the toilet, 4% opportunities following vomiting and expectoration of sputum. Ethical considerations were made such as asking for consent. The senior charge nurse gave verbal consent for the study to take place on the various wards. St aff nurses who agree to take part in the studies completed questionnaires that remained anonymous. Patients who took part in this research were asked to provide written consent and finally all participants were given appropriate information explaining the intent of the study. The Human Rights Act protects the right to respect for private and family life and thus supports the need for consent to participate in research (Masson, 2004). All research involving NHS patients or staff or conducted on NHS premises have to be approved by a NHS Ethics Committee (Center of research ethical campaign, 2009).The study approved by The hospitals Committee on Medical Research Ethics. Banfield and Kerr (2005) suggest that patient hand hygiene as HCAI continue to rise despite hand hygiene research and the implementation of a multitude of intervention strategies, the author acknowledges that there were limitations to the study. Such limitations are that patients do not receive to opportunity to partici pate in correct hand hygiene procedure. The author also recommended that patient hand hygiene practices should become an important focus within infection control intervention strategies and consideration should be given to hand hygiene facilities when patients are unable to independently access hand washing sinks. In conclusion I have recognised that there is a large sum of evidence that can be applied to practice in relation to this topic. Appling evidence-based practice within the health care setting faces many barriers such as staff not having the time or means to access or critique data. The most valuable lesson I have learnt throughout this essay is that just because there is research on a topic does not mean that this piece of work is either valuable of credible. Due to this I have realised research should be analysed to determine whether the information is useful and can be applied in practice. From the papers I have analysed I have realised that hand washing is in fact the most effective way to prevent the spread of infection but factors such as environment time and profession can affect people from washing their hands effectively. From undertaking this assignment I feel that I will continue to access evidence which underpins our practice throughout my career.

The Significance of Dinosaur Art Essay -- Exploratory Essays Research

The Significance of Dinosaur Art Dinosaurs are creatures that seem to fascinate humans, since all we have left are their fossils. Although, through art, their bodies can be put back together and we have a better sense of what they looked like. The problem with art is that pictures can sometimes be disproportionate, unrealistic, or even made up. Young children who learn about dinosaurs may think that they are actually different colors and can talk for example. This is why it is important to make dinosaur art as realistic as possible and more informative. In an article titled, "Do They Really Look Like That? The Science Of Dino Art", writer John Roach discusses people who do art and paleobiology for a living. A man by the name of Chris Sloan is a paleo artist for National Geographic in Washington, D.C.. He's not just a simple artist for the magazine, but also a researcher. He has to do activities such as "attend paleontology conferences, read scientific journals, study dinosaur fossils, talk with scientists, and go on digs"(National Geographic Society 2). This is in order to make dinosaur illustrations attractive to the eye and scientifically accurate. Being a paleo artist also requires paying close attention to the most recent discoveries. New discoveries happen all the time, and artists are very dependant on the information so that they can start their next project. It is important, however, not to be fooled by incorrect information, or hoaxes, which also happens a lot. A good paleo artist will do extensive research on the new information and get to the bottom of it before beginning a piece of art. Sloan, for example, will "read scientific papers, visit paleontologists, or sometimes travel to where a dino... ...r work published. In the future, many more discoveries of dinosaurs will be made. This way, paleo artists are never without jobs. Their work is very important and will be used always. It is important to note that â€Å"art is a reflection of science† (Sloan 2). Generations to come will need to know the truth about dinosaurs, what they looked like, and environments they lived in, so as long as scientists keep making more discoveries, dinosaur art will continue to become more realistic and accurate. A Modern Cinderella and Other Stories

A Modern Cinderella and Other Stories â€Å"A Modern Cinderella and Other Stories† by Louisa May Alcott includes four short stories, each with different themes, tones, structure and point of view. Yet on a careful reading of these four stories one can discern a common theme that can be loosely applied to all the four stories. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on A Modern Cinderella and Other Stories specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More This common theme of love and compassion is brought out in each of these stories in a very distinctive way, making each one stand out in its own right. This essay will compare and contrast the various literary elements of the four short stories and highlight the common theme of love and compassion running through the entire collection. The structure of each of these stories is laid out in a way to have maximum impact on the readers. A Modern Cinderella starts out like Cinderella’s story and shows one sister toiling h ard while other rest and ends like Cinderella when John produces the slipper. The beginning and the end justify the title for the rest of the story is nothing like the fairy tale and lays out the daily trials of simple folks. But while the Cinderella like start hooks the reader, the happy ending gives reader something to cheer about after the tragedy that had befallen the family in the middle of the story. The structure provides a perfect blend wherein comparison with the fairy tale is juxtaposed with the harsher realities of life. Debby’s Debut follows a simple structure of a love triangle where the love of the two suitors is alternately discussed to create the suspense as to which of the two Debby will chose. Although the reader is told that Debby loves Evans and there are a number of signs pointing towards Evans as the eventual winner, the depth of Leavenworth’s love is discussed in enough details to create doubt in the reader’s mind, especially in light of the pressure from Aunt Pen. This story follows the classical structure of a love triangle to keep the readers interested. The Brothers has an ebb and flow like structure. It starts slowly but the momentum builds up and reaches its high point when Robert’s identity is revealed. The tension continues as Robert proceeds to kill Ned and Faith tries to stop him. Once Robert agrees to back off, the narrative once again slows down only to rise again towards the climax. This structure has a very dramatic effect on the story and gets the reader involved in the lives of the lead characters.Advertising Looking for essay on comparative literature? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Each of the stories introduces the loving and compassionate nature of its lead characters in the opening scene. The first story, A Modern Cinderella, starts on a hot summer day when the main protagonist, Nan, is toiling alone in the kitchen while her younger sisters laze around. The arrival of John in this setting and subsequent change in Nan’s demeanor immediately makes the reader aware of the spark between these lead characters. Similarly in the Debby’s Debut, the reference to Aunt Pen’s intention of finding a suitable match for Debby, gives the first hint of an impending romance. The themes of The Brothers and Nelly’s Hospital center more around the compassion of its lead characters for other creatures. In The Brothers, nurse Faith Dane finds compassion in her heart for both the rebel soldier as well as the Mulatto, when it is clear that no one else in the hospital want to have anything to do with either of them. The main theme of Nelly’s Hospital is her compassion for her living being and once again this theme is introduced early in the story. Thus, each one of the four stories gives very specific and clear hint about their main theme in the early stages. Another idea repeated throug h the stories is that of loving one’s enemy. In The Brothers, Faith immediately agrees to care for the rebel soldier declaring that though she could not quite love her enemies, she was â€Å"willing to take care of them† (55). This theme of loving one’s enemies is repeated in Nelly’s Hospital, When Nelly compares the snake with a Rebel soldiers and yet decides to help it. In Debby’s Debut, Debby feels compassion for Clara, who would have been considered competition by other girls in her place. Astute enough to realize that Leavenworth was flirting with Clara to get her attention and that Clara might be falling for him, Debby chides Leavenworth for his actions. In the Modern Cinderella, although her sisters are not her enemies and are not intentionally cruel to her, at the beginning of the story, they come across as the â€Å"wicked stepsisters† and yet Nan jokes about them when John asks where they are. At this stage, the reader is not awa re of the true nature of the relationship between the sisters, and Nan’s charitable description of her sisters’ activities hint at her compassionate constitution. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on A Modern Cinderella and Other Stories specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Thus the idea of compassion towards enemies is firmly established across the four stories. The common theme of love and compassion is supported by author’s tone which is mostly optimistic in each of the stories. Modern Cinderella starts with the various domestic problems facing Nan, but the entry of John quickly turns the tone into optimism. The sisters share a loving relationship and even though Di and Laura tend to avoid house work and responsibilities, John’s reproach of their attitude is playful and their reaction suggests at the tight bond shared by the sisters. Despite all the problems faced by lovers, the tone never be comes pessimistic. Even the death of the sisters’ father does bring down the narrative and when Nan falls ill, it is quickly balanced by Laura’s optimistic thoughts about her sister and her resolve to become more like Nan. In Debby’s Debut, the tone is earnest and joyful as Debby attempts to please her aunt but cannot help herself from enjoying simple pleasures of life. As Debby enjoys her life despite Aunt Pen’s strict rules, the readers get pulled into the lively girl’s adventure and enjoy the vacation with her. In keeping with the subject of the story, The Brothers has a rather solemn tone. Although Robert’s experiences as a slave make him bitter, it does not affect the tone of the story which remains optimistic throughout. Finally, Nelly’s Hospital has an earnest tone as all the major characters chip in to help Nelly in her noble cause. As mentioned, each one of these stories remains optimistic even in the face of adverse circu mstances and avoid any kind of negative tone. The stories make ample use of foreshadowing to prepare the readers for the budding romance of its lead characters. In Modern Cinderella, Nan is facing a number of problems in the kitchen as she is trying to prepare the dinner all alone. But with the arrival of John â€Å"seemed to soothe all unpropitious powers with a sudden spell† (5). Advertising Looking for essay on comparative literature? Let's see if we can help you! Similarly, the mention of John giving â€Å"his own gift in his mother’s name† hints at John’s feeling for Nan long before he confesses about it to his mother. In Debby’s Debut, the readers get the first hint Frank Evans and Debby may fall in love which each other by referring to Evans as â€Å"her fate† (26). In The Brothers, Robert’s trance like conduct when Faith first sees him gives the first hint that something is right. These foreshadowing makes the readers look forward to impending romance in The Modern Cinderella and Debby’s Debut, while incites the curiosity in The Brothers. The stories introduce conflict at various stages in the plot. In a Modern Cinderella, the conflict first arises somewhere in the middle of the story when John’s mother advices him to wait a year before proposing to Nan. It is further heightened by the death of the sisters’ fathe r which puts the responsibility of the family on young Nan’s shoulders. In Debby’s Debut, conflict is present from the very start since the Aunt Pen obviously wants Debby to marry rich and Evans comes from a working class background. Leavenworth’s growing affection for Debby further complicates the conflict. In The Brothers, the conflict is introduced rather late when Robert discloses his true identity and his intentions of taking revenge. The introduction of the conflict at various stages makes the readers react in different ways in each of these stories. In the Modern Cinderella, just as the reader is starting to believe that the main protagonists will soon get together, the introduction of conflict brings back the suspense. The love triangle and Aunt Pen’s clear preference for the rich Leavenworth keeps the suspense alive throughout the story in Debby’s Debut. In The Brothers, once the conflict is revealed, readers develop sympathy for Robert and subsequently, when the Rebel recovers, readers get the feeling of injustice towards the former slave. The strategic positioning of the conflict in each of these stories keeps the reader involved and raises varying emotions. Coming to the point of view, Alcott uses various points of view in the four stories to make the desired impact. Both Modern Cinderella and Debby’s Debut are romantic stories and so the omniscient point of view of these stories keeps the readers aware of the feelings of each of the characters and heightens the conflict and suspense in these stories. The Brothers uses a First Person narration resulting in a limited point of view which in turn heightens the suspense of the proceedings. The third person narrative of Nelly’s Hospital provides readers with the facts as seen from the perspective of a young girl. This helps the readers appreciate Nelly’s efforts and empathize with her concerns. Thus using the right point of views makes conflic t and the suspense of each one these stories stand out and helps the reader to identify with the characters. While each of the stories has their own ironies, The Brothers is perhaps one of the most ironic tales ever told. Robert finds himself caring for and trying to save the man who was responsible for his wife’s death. Even though he hates Ned, for an entire week he works hard to improve his condition so that he can learn what happened to his wife. When Robert tries to kill Ned to take revenge for her wife’s death, Faith ironically evokes the dead woman’s memory to stop him from committing murder. And in the end, even though he had been wronged again and again by his former master, he is unable to get his revenge when not him but another soldier kills Ned while he dies as a result of wounds inflicted upon him by Ned. Robert feels avenged and says that â€Å"it’s better so†, perhaps because the way the things played out ensured that Robert was n ot guilty of murdering his own brother. Once again the readers witness the irony of the situation since even though he had been wronged by Ned in so many ways Robert continues to think of him as his brother. While The Brothers is full of irony, other stories in the collection also have their ironic moments. In A Modern Cinderella, the biggest irony is perhaps the fact that the girls lose their father on the happiest day of their life. Just a few hours after he accepts Phillips proposal to allow Laura to marry him, he is found dead in his garden. Alcott further brings out this irony in announcing the death. She refers to fields of grain and ripening fruits, all of which are symbols of prosperity and life and then mentions almost offhandedly that â€Å"In the silence of the night a greater Reaper had passed by†¦leaving only tender memories† (18). In Debby’s Debut, we witness the happy irony of Debby falling in love with the poor Mr. Evans despite her aunt’s best efforts to get her married to the rich Leavenworth. Also, while Aunt Pen tries to educate her niece in the sophisticated ways of the rich society, ironically it is Debby’s simple and honest demeanor which attracts Leavenworth to her. The stories also make ample use of symbols, metaphors and imagery to get the message across. A Modern Cinderella starts with a description of the sisters’ house and its surrounding and refers to the trees as â€Å"patriarchal elms stood sentinel upon the lawn, as they had stood almost a century ago† (3), just as their fathers â€Å"paternal love †¦ had been its strength and stay† (20). The problems facing Nan as she braves the house work all is best captured by the words â€Å"domestic purgatory†¦, kitchen† (4). Later, when it is obvious that Nan has fallen in love with John, the grove which she had visited since childhood to enjoy its solitude no longer felt deserted and â€Å"all things seemed to wear one shape†(13), an obvious reference to John. Just before announcing the death of their father, Alcott tells the readers the good news of Laura’s impending engagement. A little later, John and Nan walk out into the garden to look for Nan’s father. As they are walking down the garden, Alcott describes the scenery as â€Å"Fields of yellow grain were waving on the hill-side, and sere corn blades rustled in the wind, from the orchard came the scent of ripening fruit, and all the garden-plots lay ready to yield up their humble offerings to their masters hand† (18). These words serve a dual purpose at this point of the story. Besides bringing out the irony of the old man’s death, they also refer to the happiness felt by the young lovers in wake of the recently receive good news. Although the sisters always had a close bond, the death of their father brought them closer and prepared them for the long life that lay in front of them. Alcott has described this formation of a close bond between the sisters using the metaphor â€Å"the soil was made ready, and in the depth of winter the good seed was sown, was watered with many tears, and soon sprang up green with a promise of a harvest for their after years† (20). As the girls grew closer and became more responsible, their actions are described as â€Å"herbs of grace† (21). Time heals all wounds and by spring the girls had taken control of their lives and moved on after their father’s death. This aptly symbolized as â€Å"spring cleaning†. In Debby’ Debut, the contrast between old age and youth is brought out by the fact that while even though they had both had the same exhausting journey, Aunt Pen chose to sleep earl while Debby was forced to be patient even though she wanted to play at the beach. Also, while Debby rose early, Aunt Pen continued to sleep till much later. The rising sun is an apt symbol for Debby’s youth and her soon to foll ow debut. The youngsters at the summer watering hole had completely different dispositions in the privacy of their home but took on more polished roles in the each other company. This change in their personalities is captured by Alcott using the words â€Å"actors and actresses† to refer to the young crowd. In the Brothers, the various injustices faced by Robert are compared with Michael Angelo’s bronze prisoner. Also, Robert refused to adopt the last name of his masters but later took Faith’s last name as a sign of his respect for the woman who gave him a second life free of vengeful thoughts. Another symbol is Alcott’s reference to the fact that â€Å"all colored men are called boys†. Robert is described as a twenty five year old strong-limbed and manly person. Yet he is referred to as a â€Å"boy† because of his race. As Patterson points out, this confuses his identity, just as his being of mixed race results in him belonging to neither race. Similarly, being a contraband â€Å"he is neither a slave nor free† (Patterson para 5). By referring to this manly person as â€Å"boy†, Alcott symbolizes the confused nature of his identity. Thus Alcott has made ample use of imagery, symbols and metaphors to get across her message in her stories. Alcott also had a tendency to borrow heavily from her own life and experiences and this lends the realism to her stories. A Modern Cinderella, tells the story of three sisters. As pointed out by Keyser, this sister theme is repeated over and over again Alcott’s writing. A Modern Cinderella like several other of Alcott’s work, including her most famous novel, Little Women, â€Å"are based on the experience of Alcott and her sisters† (Keyser 84). Similarly, Alcott’s brief work as a nurse during the Civil War is reflected in The Brothers and Nelly’s Hospital. On the other hand, Debby’s Debut reflects her limited knowledge of fash ionable society since by the time she wrote the story it was no longer considered necessary for poor girls to â€Å"make hay and eat bread and milk out of a bowl† (Harris 117). It is obvious that her stories were much more realistic when they were directly inspired from her personal experiences. In conclusion, the four stories in the collection each have a unique take on theme of love and compassion and loving ones enemies. Each one of these stories skillfully uses the various literary elements to create the mood and deliver the punch at the right places. The fourth story, Nelly’s Hospital is simple tale of a little girl who feels compassion for living beings. Although the story is not as dramatic as the other three stories, it portrays the innocence of childhood and brings out the healing power of a kind deed. A Modern Cinderella and Debby’s Debut are classical love stories told in a simple way. And The Brothers highlights the importance of forgiving those wh o have sinned against us. Each one of these stories provides a new insight into human nature and has a literary structure to keep its readers hooked from the first word to the last. Work Cited Alcott, Louis May. Improving Organisational Performance Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words - 3

Improving Organisational Performance - Essay Example While these practices are not exactly new, this area of management differs in its deliberate introduction of bundled practices to improve performance of the organisation gradually (Cappelli & Neumark, 2012: p31). Normally, organisations will align these practices with their strategic objectives, specifically by aligning workforce output and organisational performance. This paper aims to analyse high performance work practices in relation to two case studies: Data Connections and Pannone & Partners, which are computer software services and legal services firms. The two companies’ business strategies differ in that Pannone & Partners seeks balanced growth for competitive advantage, while Data Connections seeks to improve business performance through quality delivery and acquisition of world-class talent. Both companies will be analysed in relation to how they apply various strategies in their approach to high performance work performance. These strategies are integration of HPWP with other HR practices, commitment and reward, employee training and skills needs, and high employee involvement. Performance management refers to a process through which employees and managers work in tandem to monitor, plan, and review the employee’s overall contribution and work objectives and involves continuous setting of objectives, provision of on-going feedback and coaching, and assessment of progress to ensure that workers meet career goals and objectives (Ashdown, 2014: p41). One of the theories that underpin performance management is goal theory, which highlights three core mechanisms that link performance outcomes to goals. These goals direct attention to the organisation’s priorities, stimulate efforts, and challenge employees to user skills and knowledge to enhance their success. This theory specifically emphasises the review and feedback and agreement of objectives aspects of PM (Aguinis, 2011: p28). Control theory, on the other

Forensic science - fingerprint analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Forensic science - fingerprint analysis - Essay Example Ninhydrin treatment involves dipping the items in a ninhydrin solution and allowing the prints to develop over 24 to 48 hours (Lennard, 2001). Physical developer is an aqueous solution, which contains a ferrous/ferric redox system along with silver nitrate and citric acid, and stabilised by a surfactant. Placing a document in the reagent, leads to the deposition of silver from the solution onto any latent fingermarks. The reaction is catalysed by water-insoluble components of the deposit (Lennard, 2001). Small particle reagent is a suspension of molybdenum disulfide in a detergent solution. Small particle reagent suspension can be applied with a spray and then rinsed with water to remove the excess powder (Lennard, 2001). Cyanoacrylate treatment is either with cyanoacrylate vapour or cyanoacrylate fuming, which results in the formation of a hard, white polymer on any latent print. The reaction is catalysed by moisture and ionic material present in the deposit. Cyanoacrylate fuming can be done with home-made chambers, expensive commercial units or portable fuming systems (Lennard, 2001). Basic Yellow 40 (BY40; Maxilon Flavine 10 GFF) is a non-toxic, highly fluorescent dye, which stains cyanoacrylate-developed latent prints. The stain has an excitation maximum at 440 nm with a luminescence emission peak at 490 nm. Basic Yellow 40 is very sensitive to ultraviolet light and can be used with a simple long-wavelength ultraviolet lamp (Security & Safety Supply.) When considering chemical treatments, the surface type is a major consideration. Latent fingermark deposits behave differently on different substrate types; therefore, some techniques are effective on some surfaces, but not on others (Lennard, 2001). For porous surfaces, the choice of chemical treatment will depend on whether the item was wet or not. If the item has been wet, the method

A problem in nursing and my solution to it Research Paper

A problem in nursing and my solution to it - Research Paper Example Also, there is a significant reason to believe that there are now nurses who are not educated well and are not up to the mark. The World Health Organization finds that there is a 4.3 million shortage of nurses and other caring staff around the world. It cited that the reason for this shortage is the years of low investment in the education of health workers, creating effective training, paying good wages and providing the nursing staff with a better environment and administration (WHO, 2006). One of the basic reasons that have created this shortage in countries is that the profession of nursing requires a person to be compassionate, patient and caring. Moreover, medical attention is a serious activity and the person should be competent and skilled in giving proper care. But due to the notion that nursing is an easy profession and the fact that there are many accelerated programs that result in people who are not interested in other careers or are left with no choice but to choose thi s profession, the nursing shortage has become more severe. These individuals account for the malpractice and lack of care in hospitals (Smith, 2010). Another reason that can be attributed to the shortage of nurses is the aging nursing workforce. The nursing profession was dominating in the 1960s and the 1970s and many people started to enter the market to be a nurse. But over the years, many other opportunities in other industries opened for women that resulted in women turning their careers towards some other direction. This means that currently much of the nursing staff will be old and above the age of 40. Nursing is not an easy task and requires strenuous effort by an individual to carry out their jobs. For that reason, the over aged nursing staff has resulted in shortage of nursing staff (Smith, 2010). The impact of the nursing teaching and the rate of enrollment cannot be ignored for it plays a detrimental part in it. Many students who want to become nurses will be dismayed by the lack of institutions and many nursing schools have to turn away students who may be skilled and competent due to shortage of funds and staff. With so many institutions now turning away possible candidates for nurses, it is evident that the admission process is very competitive and simultaneously very restrictive (Berlin & Sechrist, 2002). Another reason that has fueled the fire in the shortage of nurses is that there is a farce notion and perception against the field of nursing. It is true that nursing is a tough and strenuous occupation that requires a lot of hard work and physical output. But this stress is not alleviated but, in fact, elevated with the insufficient staffing of hospitals and medical institutions. With their workload cut out for them it is understandable that the nurses will not be able to give their best as they will be frustrated and stressed all the time. Long hours of shift and more work never go along and ultimately result in the dissatisfaction and lack o f motivation for nurses. This furthermore aggravates the shortage of n

Significant accomplishment Essay Example for Free

Significant accomplishment Essay The initiative in creating change has always been an integral aspect of man. Equipped with their relative skills and competencies, they engage in various efforts to create opportunities that will improve their capabilities and cater to the service of individuals. Amidst the trials and difficulties in the process, hard work and determination remains to be a vital factor in attaining their desired objectives and purpose in life. At the heart of this is the innovation that drives the creativity which I feel is crucial to the success or attainment of every accomplishment. It is this mindset which has allowed me to achieve my most significant accomplishment to date which is my success in the fashion design industry. While it was always a dream of mine to make it big in the fashion industry, I never imagined that my success would occur in this manner. I started out designing for a company that had Wal-Mart as a client. Seeing the trends in the industry, I compiled my research and submitted my designs to my supervisor. It was very gratifying to find out that the designs I made were accepted by Wal-Mart and were soon on their shelves in the market. I felt that this was a major accomplishment in my life. Another accomplishment that I would like to mention which is similar to this experience is the success I experienced designing for a Fashion Runway Company in the West Coast. I designed two shirts and sketched in four hours for the owner of the company. This was another step forward in my career because it validated my talents and gave me the confidence I needed to succeed in life.

Journalism - From China with Love Essay -- Graduate Admissions Essays

Journalism – From China with Love    The purpose behind this personal statement is to not only gain admission to your well-established and highly respected Masters program, but to impress upon you my passion for learning and my tremendous desire to succeed in the field of journalism. I have based my decision to pursue an academic career not on purely practical reasons, but rather on my own natural interests and aptitude. My personal philosophy is that the biggest loss that a person can suffer is the loss of one's enthusiasm. Without enthusiasm, life becomes monotonous and boring. My enthusiasm for continuous, life-long learning - particularly in the field of print journalism - makes me a model candidate for your Masters program.    Many applicants may claim to be from an underprivileged family, but I freely admit that I was born into a middle class family. My parents are both ordinary citizens that worked for railway companies in China. Through the influences of both my father and my mother, I fell in love with reading at an early age. My mother taught me to read (in Chinese of course) when I was only four years old. This knowledge was the key to the entrance of entire new worlds that I never could have even imagined before I learned to read. By the time that I had entered primary school, I had already finished one of the four classic works of ancient Chinese literature - The Three Kingdoms. Although this was a difficult work of literature for such a young age, I was determined and persistent enough to not only finish the book but to understand and appreciate its deeper meanings. My parents had given me the best gift that a parent can give - the love of reading. My thirst for reading was nearly unquenchable. Fo r... ...I believe that I can become highly skilled and thus better prepared to provide a quality service to society.    Secondly, with China's entry into the World Trade Organization, there will be more demand than ever for information, intelligence and awareness of the underlying meanings of the world's happenings. International and cross-cultural news reporting will inevitably clash as the values and conceptions of Eastern and Western viewpoints collide. There is a gap that must be bridged by individuals that understand Western journalism but also understand Chinese cultural perceptions. I envision a future where there will be a great need of high-caliber journalists that are unafraid of cultural barriers and that are inspired to inquire into the truth of the matters being investigated. If I am accepted into your program, I believe that I can become that individual.

There are certain conversations and behaviors that are not acceptable with everyone. My personal relationships with my friends and family allow me to vent about the work place or to seek personal advice that I could not get ask for in my work environment. Intellectual health: it allows me to review what has happened in the past and make a reasonable assumption of what will happen in the future. For instance, I have found that when I hire people that are in the business for 20 years they are not interested in following most likely not to follow the structure of the company; as if you hire a new person fresh they do not have any other experience. So there for I like to hire new people out of school because they can be molded to the SportClips way.
